Term 1 and 2

Reception

Reception will take some time to settle in to school this term, learning about and exploring the new environment around them and learning about each other. We will also learn about houses and homes and different festivals and celebrations, such as the harvest festival.

Year 1

Our overarching topic in terms 1 and 2 will be called 'Where I Live'. As part of our geography lessons we will look at the village of Pilning and the surrounding areas including the city of Bristol. We will use ariel maps to help us locate landmarks. As part of our history lessons we will look at the many changes that took place in the Victorian period with a particular focus on famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and his impact on Bristol and the rest of the U.K. In our science lessons we will look at materials. We will be thinking about why different objects are made from certain materials and will be able to group and describe different materials.

For the first 2 weeks of term, there will be a whole-school focus on the book 'The Lost Words' by Robert Macfarlane.

Our next class text will then be 'Daisy Saves the Day' by Shirley Hughes.

Please see the overview below for more information about learning in year 1 across the next 2 terms.
