Behaviour and Zones of Regulation

At St Peter’s we have introduced a new aspect to support our children regulate themselves and maintain a positive behaviour mindset.

This is called Zones of Regulation. There are many benefits to this approach including

  • Common and consistent language amongst staff
  • Simple for children, but helpful to all
  • Teaches healthy coping and regulation strategies
  • Clear progression across the lessons, inc. resources, strategies and home learning
  • Can be ran as an intervention or as a whole school provision

All children have been introduced to the different Zones – Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.

The different zones are linked to different feelings and states of regulation of dysregulation.

Here are the words we are using to describe the feelings in each zones.

Blue Zone

Green Zone

Yellow Zone

Red Zone

The children are aware of these words and what they mean linked to the zone. It would be great for parents to start to use these words and language at home to support children.

Each class has a Zones of Regulation display and area. The children have lolli sticks with their names on and they are able to indicate which zone they may be in when they arrive to school in the morning or during the day. This enables the adults in school to check in with children on a daily basis to investigate why they may feel they are in a particular zones and help them move from one to another. It is a supportive exercise and also increase the mental health and wellbeing of the children.
